His prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that would normally assess the situation calmly and say 'it is one point, I have time,' is still developing at fourteen and gets overwhelmed by the intensity of that alarm.
Named research Antonio Damasio's work on somatic markers helps explain why the pattern repeats: each collapse after a mistake creates a body-memory of failure, so the next double-fault does not just feel like a lost point.

Is this sports psychology?
No. It's brain-based coaching grounded in neuroscience. I help athletes understand how their brain works under pressure and train it to respond differently. I'm not a psychologist and this isn't therapy.
What age is this suitable for?
8–18.
Do you work with team and individual sports?
Yes. The brain skills (focus, emotional regulation, confidence, pressure management) are universal across all sports.
Can parents be involved?
Absolutely. An optional parent session helps you support your athlete without adding pressure. I also provide a small parent guide.
How do I help my child stop being nervous before games?
Pre-game nerves are the brain's threat response activating too early. We teach calming techniques (breathing patterns, visualisation, focus anchors) that regulate the nervous system before competition. These become automatic with practice. Why does my kid play worse in games than practice?
In practice, the brain is relaxed and movements are automatic. In competition, the thinking brain takes over: hyper-aware, cautious, focused on not making mistakes. How to build confidence in young athletes

What should I say to my child after a bad game?
The brain doesn't learn well in emotional overwhelm. First, offer connection, not correction. Something like "That looked tough. I'm proud of how you stayed out there."
