Why is my kid a different player in games than in practice?

LeSel calls this pattern Thinking Hands: the athlete starts consciously controlling movements that run on autopilot in training. It is not a lack of skill; it is a shift in brain state, and it can be retrained.

In practice everything flows: full swings, no fear. The moment it is a real match it all goes small and careful, and afterwards comes the question: why can I not do it when it counts?

What is actually happening

The switch

In practice, the brain is relaxed and movements are automatic. There is flow. In competition, especially when expectations rise, the thinking brain takes over: the athlete becomes more self-aware, more cautious, more focused on not making mistakes. This leads to tightness, hesitation, and inconsistency.

Why control backfires

Daniel Kahneman describes two modes of thinking: a fast, automatic mode where trained skill lives, and a slow, deliberate mode built for checking and correcting. A match invites the slow mode to grab movements the fast mode already owns, and deliberate control is simply worse at a trained skill than the autopilot it overrides.

Why it can change

The skill never left; it shows up every practice. The swing trusted in training is still the same swing, and what changes is the conditions around it: when the stakes turn on, the alarm that protects under threat also narrows the body, and the freedom often goes quiet before the stroke does. Change the conditions in practice, and the behaviour can shift: a small piece of match pressure brought into training, a few points played watched or scored out loud, teaches the body that being watched and swinging free can happen at the same time. Staying in the flow zone is a brain skill athletes can train like any other.

The match-day gap has look-alikes.

Parents often bring this pattern in under another name. The timeline tells them apart.

  • The Error Echo needs a mistake to start: one error affects the next several points. Thinking Hands needs no mistake at all; the athlete is careful from the first point.
  • Choking under pressure lives in the big moment: the brain's threat response fires when the stakes spike. Thinking Hands runs through whole matches, including friendly ones nobody is watching.
  • Fear of mistakes is about motivation: playing not to lose, avoiding risk. Thinking Hands is about mechanics: the movements themselves go deliberate, even when the athlete is trying to play free.
  • Thinking Hands is the only one of the four where the tell is the gap itself: full skill on the practice court, a smaller, more careful athlete in the match, with nothing in between to blame.

What to try this week

The goal is not to think harder about technique. It is to give the thinking mind one simple job that is not the hands.

The full-swing week
  1. Give your thinking mind one simple job during points so it stops trying to steer your body. Pick a single word, like smooth or release, and say it to yourself before each swing. Let that word fill the space where the careful instructions would go.
  2. When you notice the swing shrinking, name what happened without the verdict. Say the ball went short rather than I went small. The first is a fact you can adjust; the second is a story that tightens the next swing too.
  3. Bring a small piece of match pressure into practice this week. Ask someone to watch a few points, or keep score out loud for one game. Play those points with your full swing, not the careful version, so your body learns that being watched and swinging free can happen at the same time.

Your part, from the sideline

What is going right is that the skill is genuinely in there, or the gap would not feel so shocking to either of you. What looks like collapse is actually an alarm response flooding the system and temporarily locking the door to what your child knows. In your own words, you might say that the feeling is real but it is not the truth about what they can do, and that you are going to help them find one small step that stays under the alarm. What matters most is that they feel you standing with them in the mess of it, not waiting on the other side of a clean result. On match day itself, no technique instructions; save those for training, where the autopilot is built.

Is it just nerves?
