How do I help my young athlete recover after a mistake?

LeSel calls this pattern the Error Echo, or the Reset-Speed Deficit: one mistake affects the next several points because the brain has no tool to close the loop. It is a brain-state pattern, not a character flaw, and it can be retrained.

One double fault. One missed penalty. One line call that goes the wrong way. The mistake itself lasts a second; what follows it takes the next several points, and afterwards comes the sentence no pep talk reaches: "I ruined it again."

What is actually happening

The cascade

When a young athlete makes a mistake in competition, the amygdala, the brain's threat-detection system, fires as though something dangerous has happened. Cortisol and adrenaline flood in. The prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that would normally assess the situation calmly and say "it is one point, I have time," is still developing at this age and gets overwhelmed by the intensity of that alarm.

Why it repeats

Antonio Damasio's work on somatic markers helps explain why the pattern repeats: each collapse after a mistake creates a body-memory of failure, so the next mistake does not just feel like a lost point. Watch the body and you can see it happening: the shoulders dropping after the miss is the body agreeing with the verdict before the game is even over, one mistake getting labelled as a pattern, and the rest of the performance following the label rather than staying in the moment.

Why it can change

Neuroplasticity means the neural pathways that fire together wire together, and right now the mistake-to-collapse pathway is strong because it has been repeated. But the same mechanism can build a new pathway: mistake-to-reset-to-next-point.

Not every wobble is the Error Echo.

Four of the eight patterns LeSel sees in young athletes look alike from the sideline. The timeline tells them apart.

  • Choking under pressure lives in the big moment itself. Big moments trigger the brain's threat response: tight muscles, narrow vision, rushed decisions. Nothing has to go wrong first.
  • Fear of mistakes bites before any mistake. Playing not to lose instead of playing to win: the athlete avoids risk and holds back so the error never happens.
  • Thinking Hands runs all game long. The athlete consciously controls movements that run on autopilot in training, overthinking technique exactly when it matters.
  • The Error Echo starts only after the mistake. The mistake itself is often ordinary; it is the next several points that go. The tell is reset speed, which is why its other name is the Reset-Speed Deficit, and why the fix is a reset, not more technique.

What to try this week

Teach your athlete a physical reset they can use in the twenty seconds between points, not after the match. The simplest version:

  1. Exhale slowly through pursed lips for four counts.
  2. Drop the shoulders.
  3. Squeeze the non-dominant hand.

Practise it in training first, when nothing is at stake. Reset tools like this become automatic with practice.

Your part, from the sideline

The brain doesn't learn well in emotional overwhelm. After a hard match, offer connection, not correction. Something like:

"That looked tough. I'm proud of how you stayed out there."

This regulates the nervous system and creates the safety needed for reflection later. Avoid analysing the game on the car ride home.

When the mistake was a bad call rather than their own error, one more rule: no mid match justice speeches from the fence. They feed the courtroom they are already stuck in. Afterwards, lead with the human before the cross examination. One curious question is plenty: when did your body tighten, the call, or the next two points? Gems first, tilt second.

My athlete says "I ruined it again" after one mistake. What should I say?
