Why does my child tighten up once they are ahead?

LeSel calls this pattern Protect-the-Lead, or Finish-Line Mind: the athlete plays freely until they are ahead, then turns cautious, tight, and focused on the result. It is a brain-state pattern, not a character flaw, and it is common in individual and team sports alike.

What is actually happening

The flip

They play freely until they are ahead or close to winning, then turn cautious, tight, and focused on the result. This is not softness, and the person who built the lead is real. What takes over after a lead is not a missing skill; it is a switch from doing to not losing, and the switch happens without the athlete choosing it.

Why a lead feels like danger

Daniel Kahneman's work on how we weigh outcomes helps explain the switch: losses loom larger than gains. While the score is level there is nothing to lose. The moment there is a lead, there is, and the brain quietly changes games: from playing the next point to defending something it now owns.

The identity layer

The pattern runs deepest when identity is fused to the outcome, the situation in the Lucas sample on the Sports page. When the result carries who the athlete is, a lead stops being a score. It becomes something of theirs that can be taken.

The only pattern the scoreboard switches on.

Each of the eight LeSel patterns has a trigger. This one's trigger is being ahead.

  • Choking under pressure fires on the size of the moment, whatever the score. A tight final point chokes; a routine one does not.
  • Fear of mistakes is there from the first point: playing not to lose before anything has been won.
  • The Error Echo needs an error: one mistake affects the next several points.
  • Protect-the-Lead needs none of that. The athlete can be playing their best match of the season; the lead itself is the trigger. Watch where the caution starts and you will usually find a score, not a mistake.

What to try this week

The lead protocol: three moves for the next time a lead arrives. Practise the language before the match, so the cue is there when the comfort is.

  1. Name the danger. Comfort after the lead is the seed of the slip. Quiet cue: pressure, not party. One point. Then one point.
  2. Give the judge a watching job. Bounce hit, seams, or the sound of contact. When the judge is busy seeing, the player can hit again.
  3. One craft job only. High percentage first ball. Strength to their weaker side. Make them play one more. No circus pattern to close it pretty.

Your part, from the sideline

The watching part is hard, and it matters more than it looks. Managing the score from the side tends to feed the very caution they are already fighting, so quiet presence for the effort says more than any keep going ever can. Afterwards, let the person come before the post match questions. One curious question is plenty: where did your body tighten, when you were ahead, or on the points right after? And when everything is calm, say the quiet part out loud:

"My love does not rise and fall with how you finish from in front."

Is my child just not a closer?
No. These are brain-state patterns, not character flaws. The same athlete who tightens at 4-1 up plays freely at 1-4 down, which is the giveaway: the skill and the fight are both there, and it is the lead that changes the brain's frame, not a missing quality in the child.
Does this happen in team sports too?
Yes, it is common in individual and team sports alike: the team that stops playing and starts defending a 1-0 lead is running the same pattern. The brain skills involved (focus, emotional regulation, pressure management) are universal across sports.
Why do they play worse once they are ahead?
Because losses loom larger than gains. While the score is level there is nothing to lose; the moment there is a lead, there is, and the brain quietly changes games, from playing the next point to defending something it now owns. It is a switch from doing to not losing, and it happens without the athlete choosing it.
