Why is my child playing not to lose?

LeSel calls this pattern fear of mistakes: playing not to lose instead of playing to win. It is a brain-state pattern, not a character flaw, and the way out runs through what the athlete believes a mistake means.

The line to carry

The big swing stays in the bag. The pass goes sideways instead of forward. Nothing goes wrong, exactly, and nothing goes right the way it does in training, because the whole game is being played to keep a mistake from happening.

What is actually happening

The frame

Playing not to lose instead of playing to win. The athlete avoids risk, holds back, and stops trying the things that make them good. The skill is untouched; the permission to use it is what has gone, and the relief of not messing up quietly takes the place of the shot they actually have. Listen for the sentence after the match: at least I did not mess it up this time.

Where it often starts

Children are constantly picking up on what we believe about them, the Pygmalion Effect. A comment like "You should win this match" may come from a place of encouragement, but the brain can interpret it as pressure: if I don't win, I disappoint. Over time, this creates tension and fear of failure.

The way out

Carol Dweck's growth mindset is the counter-frame. When something feels difficult, a fixed mindset says "I'm not good at this"; a growth mindset creates space for "I'm not there yet." When a child feels allowed to learn, allowed to struggle, and still valued when they lose, the brain stays open, flexible, and engaged.

The safe shot costs more than the mistake.

This is the before-the-error pattern, and that timing is exactly what makes it expensive.

  • The Error Echo is what a mistake costs after it happens: the next several points. Fear of mistakes pays before: every point is taxed a little so that no single point fails loudly.
  • Real confidence comes from repeated experiences of managing difficulty, staying engaged under pressure, and recovering from mistakes. The safe game quietly cancels all three: nothing is risked, so nothing is managed, and nothing is recovered from.
  • Fear of mistakes therefore feeds the very thing it protects against. The mistake it avoids this match is the confidence it cannot build for the next one. That trade, not the caution itself, is what LeSel coaches on.

What to try this week

This week's moves are yours, not the athlete's. The fear listens to what it thinks you expect, so the experiment is in your language.

The next match
  1. Name the difference out loud before the next match. Tell her you noticed the training swings stayed in the bag, and that the safe shot is a choice, not a requirement. Keep it to one sentence, said once, so it lands as observation rather than instruction.
  2. Give her one external cue for the big shot, something she can focus on instead of the mechanics or the outcome. A single word like smooth or through, tied to the feel of the swing she already has, lets the body do what it knows without the thinking brain stepping in to steer.
  3. After the match, ask about one shot she went for, not the ones she played safe. If she says she did not mess it up, you can say you are glad, and that you also want to see the training swing next time.
