It was only a match point and the legs went heavy, the swing went short, and afterwards the only word used was embarrassing. Nothing had gone wrong until that point. Then the whole match went with it.

What is actually happening

The threat response

Big moments trigger the brain's threat response: tight muscles, narrow vision, rushed decisions. The amygdala, the brain's threat-detection system, fires as though something dangerous is happening. Cortisol and adrenaline flood in, and the prefrontal cortex, still developing in a young athlete, gets overwhelmed by the intensity of that alarm.

The watching that breaks the swing

Often the match point itself does not break the swing. The moment makes the athlete start watching the swing, and the watching makes it go short. Pressure redirects attention onto a skill that was already running smoothly on its own: Internal pressure spikes, the thinking brain tries to supervise what the body knows how to do, and the legs go heavy. Antonio Damasio's work on somatic markers helps explain why it arrives as body before thought: the heavy legs are the brain's forecast of the moment landing in the body before the point is played.

Why it can change

The match goes with it not because the skill left, but because attention landed in the wrong place at the worst time, and where attention lands is a condition, not a character. Pressure is not the enemy; it is how the brain interprets it, and a short routine before the big point, one breath and one cue, becomes automatic with practice the way any brain skill does.

Nothing has to go wrong first.

What separates choking from its neighbours is that the trigger is the moment itself, not an event inside it.

  • The Error Echo needs a mistake: one error affects the next several points. Choking needs no error; the athlete can be playing perfectly walking into the big point.
  • Thinking Hands runs through whole matches, big and small. Choking is selective: the routine points are fine and the match point is not.
  • Protect-the-Lead is switched on by the scoreboard. Choking is switched on by the size of the moment, whatever the score: a deciding point, a final, a trial with a selector watching.
  • Choking under pressure is the moment's size read as threat. Same athlete, same skill, and a nervous system that has decided this point is dangerous. That reading, not the skill, is what LeSel works on.

What to try this week

Three moves for the big point. The swing does not have to survive the moment unprotected.

  1. When the legs go heavy, take one slow breath and give your mind a single physical job, something outside the swing itself. Watch the ball seams or say one word like 'smooth' so the thinking brain has something to do besides supervise the stroke.
  2. After a short swing or a missed point, call it what it is in observation language, not identity language. Say 'the swing went short' rather than 'embarrassing', so one moment stays one moment and does not become the story of the match.
  3. Before the next match point arrives, rehearse what you will do in the ten seconds before it. A short routine, one breath and one cue, gives the body a familiar path so the swing does not have to survive the moment unprotected.

What about nerves before the game even starts?
That is a neighbouring pattern, not this one: pre-game nerves are the brain's threat response activating too early, before the first point rather than at the big one. We teach calming techniques (breathing patterns, visualisation, focus anchors) that regulate the nervous system before competition, and these become automatic with practice.
Does choking mean my child can't handle pressure?
No. These are brain-state patterns, not character flaws. Skill is rarely the problem; state is. The same nervous system that reads a big point as threat can be trained to read it as a big point, and pressure management is a brain skill like any other.
Why do they fall apart on match point but not on ordinary points?
Because the trigger is the size of the moment, not an event inside it. A routine point asks nothing unusual of the brain; a match point can be read as threat, and the threat response tightens muscles, narrows vision, and pushes attention onto a skill that was running smoothly on its own. The watching makes the swing go short. Skill is rarely the problem; state is.
